CERTFORCHILE is the Chilean certification scheme in sustainable forest management. Since 2004, is has been recognized and endorsed by the Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification organization, (www.pefc.org). At the moment, the PEFC schemes cover 191, 6 million hectares of certified forests, i.e. 70% of the world certified area.
As part of PEFC participation-based processes, a General Assembly is held each year. It is composed of officials from 31 countries, scheme members, extraordinary members, representatives of environmental organizations, trade unions, international organizations, etc… The main objective is conversing and delineating the PEFC future development.
In the PEFC Council’s 10th General Assembly held in the USA, many issues were discussed while UK PEFC newly elected President Michael Clark’s message was enhanced: “Having established the world’s largest resource and availability of certified wood, PEFC will focus on market acceptance of certified products”.
During the Assembly, several important themes were highlighted:
ELECCIONES
Mr. Henri Plauche Gillon (France PEFC), who had headed the organization for more than seven years, handed it over to Mr. Clark and said: "PEFC is rapidly approaching the mark of 200 million hectares of certified forests globally, with more than 18,000 PEFC logo users and more than 2,800 certified enterprises. I end my chairmanship with the confidence that the world system for forest certification, which helps to protect forests around the globe, is ready to address the future challenges of the market place."
Mr. Michael Clark (UK PEFC) has been unanimously elected by the Council as the new PEFC President for a 3 year period. Clark pointed out that having established the world’s largest resource of certified wood, PEFC could focus on markets. In addition, the PEFC delegates have elected Mr. Antti Sahi (Finland PEFC) as new Vice Chairman as well as six new members as Board Directors.
CHAIRMAN’S REPORT
In his annual report, the Chairman underlined that, in the last 12 months, PEFC certified area has increased by almost 65 million hectares, a growth of more than 50%. The number of businesses with a PEFC Chain of Custody certificate has increased by more than 20%. More than two thirds of all certified forests around the world are certified to PEFC endorsed systems and PEFC is being chosen by a fast growing number of governmental and private procurement policies.
MEMBERSHIP IN THE PEFC COUNCIL
ETS, the European Tissue Symposium organization (www.europeantissue.com), representing the majority of the tissue production throughout the EU, was welcomed as the 11th Extraordinary Member of the PEFC Council. The delegates voted in favour of transferring the current membership of Russia to a new Russian umbrella organization, comprising the two national forest certification initiatives in Russia.
NEW PEFC DOCUMENTATION
Two new documents were adopted by the members and have become new elements in PEFC international Chain of Custody standard. On October 27, corrections were added to Appendix 1 and Appendix 6 and two new Appendices were also added:
Appendix 7: Timber obtained from controversial logging practices
Appendix 8: Non Timber Forest Products
To allow future assessments of forest certification systems in Asia and in countries covered by the International Tropical Timber Organization (ITTO) process, the delegates adopted the ITTO documentation to be used as a benchmark for assessment of forest management standards in tropical countries.
