The uprising of certified area was generated in the year 1999. One of the most important factors for the rapid increase in that period was the pressure - exercised by marketing campaigns - and direct pressure to distribution chains, to which it was demanded that they only had certified wood suppliers. Nevertheless, even if these pressures have relaxed since then, the certified forest area is still happening.

By analyzing the evolution of area covered by certification scheme, one can notive a considerable increase in PEFC certified area during 2005, as a result of the incorporation of two national schemes of great global presence: SFI (United States) and CSA (Canada) have together added another 100 million certified hectares to the system.
