Slovak Forest Certification Association (SFCA)
Incorporation year 2002
The Slovak Forest Certification Association (SFCA) was established in 2002 and it became a PEFCC member in the same year. The development of Slovak Forest Certification System was completed in 2004 and the system was endorsed by PEFCC the 12 August 2005.
The founding members are state and non-state forest owners, representatives of industries and other stakeholders such as forestry associations, trade unions, research organisations, educational organisations and non-government organisations.
The objective is to promote sustainable forest management and consumption of timber and wood products as a renewable resource of raw material. Furthermore, it aims at the endorsement of nature conservation principles and sustainable development of the society as a whole.
In SMF the system uses regional certification – all country area is divided into 4 regions for which SFM certificates are issued. Participation of forest owners in forest certification is on voluntary basis.
The Slovak scheme uses the PEFC International Chain of Custody standard (Annex 4 of the PEFC Technical Document) for the purposes of chain of custody certification.
The Slovak Forest Certification Association has Certified forest area – 1 263 415 ha (over 63% of the total forest area), 18 CoC certificates and 57 PEFC logo Licenses.
National forest certification activities were mainly initiated and driven by the state forest sector, later on by big industries (pulp and paper, sawmills) that started to use available PEFC certified timber through tracing timber origin using international PEFC C-o-C standard. C-o-C certification in Slovakia is mostly driven by foreign demand as over 50% of wood products is exported from the country.
PEFC AND THE BIG TRADEMARKSSome examples of companies that uses the Logo are Mondi Business Paper, Smurfit Kappa and Rettenmeier.
