KNOWING THE PEFC FAMILY
PEFC Sweden

The creation and institutionalization of an associate structure called “PAFC Gabon” was in October 2004.

The PAFC Gabon Forest Certification Scheme was endorsed by the PEFC Council as meeting the PEFC Council requirements on 24 April 2009. The endorsement is valid for three years.

The main objective is to create a national scheme for forest certification and for chain of custody certification including procedures and recommendations which will promote sustainable forest management, bringing to wood industry professionals (operators, industrialists, traders…), citizens and consumers, the necessary guarantees related to sustainable forest management and the origin of products.

The objective of the PAFC Gabon Association is to promote the national scheme at the international level, and to make it become an internationally recognized scheme of certification for sustainable forest management of Gabonese forests.

The GFCS uses the PEFC International Chain of Custody standard (Annex 4 of the PEFC Technical Document) for the purposes of chain of custody certification.

For the moment they have no certified surface, but they hope to begin soon the certification processes.

Carole says: “We are happy and relieved to have at last our PEFC endorsement after five years of :struggling, reunions, learning, auditing, long trips, and teaching again and again the good points a forest certification made in a country by the people of this country is as far as good as one made abroad. We are proud of our process, of our scheme, of our no sleep nights to work on this, with no payment. Now, we can say that we have made it even if we do have the feeling that we had and still have to do more than other countries. We can now begin to talk about it freely and to prepare our first actions as a well known contributor to forest certification. And the first one in Central Africa; we hope to stay a leader in Congo Basin and to give other countries the opportunity to start the process”.
