KNOWING THE PEFC FAMILY
PEFC Ireland

William Marivale
PEFC Germany e.V.
Incorporation year 2008

PEFC (Ireland) Ltd was incorporated in August 2008 and were formally voted in as a member of the PEFC Council at the General Assembly in Canberra in October 2008. The founding member is the Irish Timber Growers Association (ITGA) which is the representative body for private forest owners in Ireland

Their objectives are to promote both forest management and chain of custody certification throughout Ireland; to help coordinate a forest management certification standard setting process; to raise awareness amongst the general public as well industry of the importance of sustainable forest management; and to lobby the Irish government and public sector to ensure rapid implementation of an improved public timber procurement policy.

At present there is no Irish forest management certification standard. William says: “I have been involved in establishing a Standard Setting Forum which is currently drafting an Irish standard in accordance with PEFC International’s rules and with the aim of endorsement by PEFC Council”.

Without a standard there is as yet no PEFC-certified forest in the country, though the FSC-certified area extends to over 400,000 hectares. There are now 28 PEFC Chain of Custody certificates and 9 logo licenses have been issued (though they are waiting on a further 4 signed contracts to be returned). They work in accordance with Annex 4

EVOLUTION AND TRENDS

William Says: “I think there is a growing degree of interest on the part of Irish companies to become certified, however unfortunately PEFC Ireland’s arrival has coincided with the worst economic situation for over 20 years, consequently everybody is more cost-conscious than ever and it is proving very difficult to persuade companies to become certified unless they are already very committed to the concept. The construction industry has been the worst hit by the recession so demand for timber is lower than it has been for a long time. However, on the plus side the number of certificates has grown from 11 in May 2008 to 28 now and our target is to try to reach 50 by the end of this year”.
