KNOWING THE PEFC FAMILY
PEFC GERMANY

German Forest Certification Scheme was created in July 1999. It was endorsed by PEFC Council on July 2000 for first time and was re-endorsed on December 2005.

The German scheme uses the PEFC International Chain of Custody standard (Annex 4 of the PEFC Technical Document) for the purposes of chain of custody certification.

The German certification scheme follows the succeeding objectives: documentation and improvement of SFM, improvement of the image of forestry and its market partners, and marketing support for wood and wood products from SFM.

PEFC Germany has (so far) elaborated the option of regional certification exclusively. In Germany regional certification is the best option to ensure that the large number small family forest enterprises are not discriminated.
Currently, PEFC Germany has 7,3 millions certified hectares (66% of the total forest area) and has issued 850 chains of custody, 40 of them are multi-site certificate with 313 sites included.

Dirk says: “PEFC in Germany is a success story: the certified forest area is significantly bigger in comparison with our competitor FSC (0,3 mio hectares!) and the growth of CoC certification is still overwhelming. Especially the number of CoCs in the printing sector is growing exponentially. As far as the Public Procurement Policy of our government is concerned, PEFC is fully accepted as proof of a legal and sustainable forest management”.

Porsche and Toyota use certified paper with the PEFC logo for their catalogs in Germany. Also Banks, as Deutsche Bank, NRW Bank and WestLB, and logistic company as a Deutsche Post.
