KNOWING THE PEFC FAMILY
PEFC BELGIUM

Vanessa Biebel
National Secretary - PEFC Belgium
Incorporation year 1999
The non-profit association WoodNet was created in September 1997. WoodNet has been the Belgian member of the Platform for the Endorsement of Forest Certification Council (PEFC COUNCIL) since its foundation in 1999. WoodNet took in charge the creation, coordination and promotion of PEFC in Belgium. WoodNet changed his name into PEFC Belgium in 2007 to restricted its social object to the activities linked only to PEFC.
The Belgian Scheme and the regional standards were adopted by PEFC COUNCIL on 25 February 2002. This Scheme uses the PEFC International Chain of Custody standard (Annex 4 of the PEFC Technical Document) for the purposes of chain of custody certification. The Scheme was re-endorsed on 4 March 2008. Currently, the country has more than 200.000 certified hectares (Approximatly 40% of the Belgium forest surface), 159 Chain of Custody certificates and 150 PEFC licences.
EVOLUTION
PEFC is going very well in Belgium. Last year we saw a huge growth in the graphic sector (primarily printers). More and more companies are using PEFC paper in they communication (promotional magazines such as Volvo and others). Also the public procurement policies are asking for PEFC at federal level and also regional and local levels. Our biggest issue this year is the revision of our federal public procurement policy (till now they accept PEFC but are making distinction between PEFC members).
Our Minister of environment launched a campaign in 2009 on sustainable wood and more particular on certified wood. They also elec-ted a study to know how much certified wood is selling in Belgium.
