KNOWING THE PEFC FAMILY
PEFC UNITED STATES

Kathy Abusow
President & CEO / SFI Inc
PEFC US is unique in the PEFC family because it represents two forest certification programs: the Sustainable Forestry Initiative ® (SFI Inc.) and the American Tree Farm System (ATFS).
The SFI program is also unique in that it covers two nations: the United States and Canada, with more than 60 million hectares certified. SFI Inc. is PEFC’s National Governing Body for the United States. SFI Inc. is a non-profit charitable organization and the SFI program is an internationally recognized and globally accepted standard, and among the largest in the world.
Today more than 700 organizations across North America are involved in the SFI program. In 2005, the SFI 2005-2009 forest management standard was endorsed by the Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification. In North America, the SFI program offers chain of custody, fiber sourcing and forest management certifications for its program participants, with accompanying SFI labels. Because the SFI forest management standard is endorsed by PEFC, a PEFC label can be used with a PEFC chain of custody certification.
The American Tree Farm System was endorsed by PEFC in 2008 and it represents fa-mily forest owners in the United States. Together, the SFI and ATFS certified lands make up 30 million hectares in the United States (note, SFI also has 38 million hectares certified in Canada). Currently there are 121 SFI Annex 4 PEFC CoC certificates administered through PEFC US.
Could you please give us your point of view about PEFC certification in U.S.A?
"There has been tremendous support for forest certification in the US market over the past year. Research shows that consumers believe it is important or essential to have eco-labels,” says Kathy Abusow, president and CEO of SFI Inc. "Obviously SFI and PEFC labels are an important tool in helping consumers to make responsible purchasing decisions. It’s a trend we expect to continue”.
