KNOWING THE PEFC FAMILY
PEFC Australia

National Secretary - PEFC Australia
Incorporation year 2004

The Australian Forest Certification Scheme (AFCS) was launched in December 1999 with the support of the state and forest industries. The standards were developed under the Australian standards development process and included the participation of social, environmental and economic stakeholders.

The AFCS was endorsed by the Programme for Endorsement of Forest Certification Schemes (PEFC) during the General Assembly in October 2004, which was held in Santiago, Chile.

Australia is one of seven non-European countries that conform PEFC(Australia, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Gabon, Malaysia and USA). At present, The AFCS is in the process of re-endorsement by the PEFC Council and now is being reviewed by an independent Panel of Experts.

The AFCS includes a national forest standard called the Australian Forestry Standard (AFS) and a chain of custody standard. The AFS is applicable to both natural and plantation forests.

Currently, the Australian system has 7.884.291 certified hectares, 30 Chain of custody certificates and 49 PEFC Licenses.

The next General Assembly, will be held in Canberra, Australia at the end of October 2008.
