PEFC FOREST AND CHAIN OF CUSTODY IN THE UK
A success story in the development of fo-rest certification.
The PEFC UK Certification Scheme for Sustainable Forest Management received international endorsement on the 6th March 2002 by the PEFC Council, and the most recent revision was re-endorsed in the early part of 2008.
The Scheme is based on the UK Woodland Assurance Standard (UKWAS), as the model for certification of forest management standards in the UK. UKWAS has been deve-loped, over the last eight years, through a partnership of forestry, social and environmental organisations, who through a process of consensus have unanimously adopted the Standard. Significantly, it is recognised by international forest certification schemes, including PEFC, which means that wood pro-ducts from UKWAS certified forests can carry the label of one of these schemes, if the rules of the individual scheme have been met.
Currently, PEFC UK does not have any certified forest area registered under the Scheme, as all the UK certified area, which amounts to about 50% of the total forest cover, is certified under FSC, but it is hoped that over the next few years most of the forest will become dual certified under both the PEFC and FSC Schemes. However, the growth of PEFC Chain of Custody certification has grown at an astonishing rate over the last two years and now totals nearly 900 certificates with this number more or less doubling every 12 months. Similarly, the number of logo licen-ces issued continues to grow and now there are some 600 in existence.
In the future forest and chain of custody certification in the UK will play a key role in de-monstrating sustainable forest management, as buyers of timber and paper products are increasingly looking for the necessary and verifiable assurances that the origin of the products is from well managed forests, with the associated chain of supply claims de-monstrating the completeness of the process. Indeed the UK government through its Timber Procurement Policy have clearly sta-ted this requirement and PEFC, together with FSC, have both been placed in the highest category of Certification Schemes for delive-ring sustainable forest management claims.
Already this is being demonstrated in the market place with an ever increasing number of purchasers demanding that only certified products are acceptable, both for paper and timber products.
Interestingly and as an example of awareness, the 2012 Olympic Games to be held in London will only use certified timber pro-ducts.
Also more and more of the leading companies are stipulating that all products they use or sell are derived from certified forests.
As the UK is one of the largest importers of timber and timber products in the world, the importance of forest and chain of custody certification will undoubtedly continue to grow over the next few years and will become the standard requirement of most consumers.
